The Ramayana is one of the greatest epics in Hindu mythology. From the show’s opening scene with Maharishi Vashishta peacefully addressing his students adorned in colourful costumes to the final scene where Rama and Sita are ceremoniously welcomed back to Ayodhaya, The Indian Dance Centre’s Ramayana is an engaging show that audiences of all age groups and backgrounds can appreciate and enjoy. Throughout the show, audience members eagerly anticipate exciting scene changes, entrances of new characters in elaborate costumes, and beautifully choreographed traditional Indian dance and theatrical performances accompanied by lively and percussive music.
The audience is moved by Rama’s valour and the love and devotion demonstrated by Rama’s father King Dasaratha, Rama’s wife Sita, his brothers Lakshman and Bharat, the noble winged Jatayu and the great Demigod and commander of the monkeys, Hanuman. The audience is moved to tears of outrage at the betrayal of King Dasaratha by his Queen Kaikeyi who has been tainted by her disturbed maidservant Manthara and experiences tears of laughter with the entrance of the Demon King Ravana and his intoxicated demon compatriots and the antics of Hanuman’s loyal monkey devotees. Exciting fight scenes between the dance drama’s protagonists and demons leave audiences at the edge of their seats, awaiting moments in the production when forces of good will reign over evil.
