Love Letters

21 May 2014 to 24 May 2014

A totally unique theatre experience, celebrating the art of the written word.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Love Letters has enveloped audiences with its unique format that has attracted the likes of world class actors in its starring roles, including Elizabeth Taylor, Jerry Hall, Kathleen Turner, Christopher Reeve, Mel Gibson, Sissy Spacek, Stockard Channing, William Hurt, Christopher Walken, Carol Burnett and Lynne Redgrave.  This colourful exploration of a lifelong friendship between two people became a Broadway hit for both its stellar lineup and the spectacular quality of the playwright’s work.

Melissa Gardner and Andy Ladd are childhood friends.  Both born into wealthy New York families, they begin writing to each other with tentative holiday postcards, birthday invitations and thank you letters.  As the children move on to boarding school, college and beyond, they stay in touch through a series of letters that explore their blossoming hopes for romance as well as their changing fortunes.  Andy becomes a celebrated lawyer, while Melissa leaves a trail of controversy and school expulsions behind her, eventually becoming an artist.

Through 50 years of laughter, pain, unions and estrangements, the bond between Andy and Melissa remains unbreakable.  Her life descends into alcoholism and family break-ups, while his reaches for the glory of the US Senate – all the while they grasp at the chance of love with each other, and share their experiences of love with others.

This intimate recital of letters will continue to astound, charm and move Australian audiences on this 2014 tour by HIT Productions.  Love Letters stars real-life couple Hannah Waterman (Eastenders) and Huw Higginson (The Bill).
