Thompson has been designing and building sets since 2008 when he designed the set for Phoenix Players' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He has also designed for Tuggeranong Arts Centre's Manly Mates and Gertrude's Hamlet and for the last few years he has designed sets for Fresh Funk.
Recently for Queanbeyan Players Thompson has designed the set for Fame, Me and My Girl, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Kismet, and The Sound of Music.
