The Rational Dress Society And Other Tales is local playwright Elizabeth Avery Scott's newest comedic work. Directed by Clare Moss, students from Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art will perform in the world premiere at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre this November.
Set in a Victorian music hall, this play-with-music takes us back to a time when the Corset - that classic undergarment forming the perfect silhouette - was used not only to support women, but to control them.
Seen through the eyes of a range of historical characters - from Oscar Wilde, to suffragettes, to gymnastics instructors, and indeed, members of the Rational Dress Society from which the play takes its name - the corset's dalliance with the female form is observed, marvelled at and... rightly questioned.
In the vein of the BBC's Horrible Histories, The Rational Dress Society and Other Tales takes its audience on a romp through nineteenth century mores, fashions and values... to discover a world that's perhaps not so different from our own.
