OSMaD

OSMaD is a non-professional company which draws widely from those interested in music and theatre performance and production.

OSMaD – the Old Scotch Music and Drama Club had its beginnings in the Old Scotch Music Club formed originally in October 2005. Scotch College has an association with Music and Drama which now stretches over 160 years and a warranted reputation for excellence. However, there had been little opportunity for past students to continue the involvement developed during school days.

Timed to coincide with the completion of the James Forbes Academy, the inception of the OSMC was designed to provide an avenue to allow Old Boys to continue their involvement in music.

The James Forbes Academy is now well known to many as a place of amazing miracles where great things happen. Anyone who has attended music performances in the JFA knows that this is a place which regularly produces to world standard quality. The Geoffrey McComas Theatre is a fully resourced state-of-the art theatrical space which in its relatively short life has already seen many acclaimed school musicals and drama productions. Equally the Ian Roach Concert Hall provides a technically perfect forum for music presentation.

The significant involvement of drama in OSMaD mix arrived in 2008 with an ambitious full scale production of Les Miserables – followed in 2009 with Jesus Christ Superstar, in 2010 My Fair Lady, 2011 Sweeney Todd, 2012 World Premier of Normie, 2013 The Music Man, 2014 The Producers, 2015 Oliver!. Each of these past musical productions have delighted audiences, drawn wide praise from the critics winning several awards and nominations for Production of the Year by the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria.

All shows have been open audition productions so members of the broader amateur theatrical community have always been encouraged to audition. This has ensured that the cast, whilst remaining amateur, is of the highest quality possible.

Melbourne is fortunate in that it has Australia’s most vibrant non-professional theatre scene and the brilliance of those who auditioned for past OSMaD productions has been testament to that. Theatre and performance require talent but they are also an addiction for people who love to sing and to perform and are excellent at what they do.

The company is not restricted to the Scotch College community. If you are interested in taking part and in supporting what we do in the future please contact us.
