A Month of Sundays - touching comedy with a lot of heart

5 Apr 2013 to 13 Apr 2013

A moving comedy from the author of the TV series As Time Goes By comes to Roleystone Theatre this April

Written by Bob Larbey and directed by Phil Mackenzie, A Month of Sundays is set in an aged care home and follows two residents facing the difficulties of growing old and painful family visits with dignity and humour.

Kim Martin plays Cooper, who voluntarily left his family to avoid depending on them, while his friend Aylott is slowly drifting into senility.

“Cooper is an ageing man who is physically deteriorating but still has a very sharp mind,” he said.

“He’s determined not to let his circumstances get him down and devises little flights of fancy with Aylott while also flirting with the nurses.”

Involved in theatre for more than 40 years, Martin has been an actor, director, musical director, composer, playwright, lyricist and pianist for shows in Northam, Kalgoorlie and Roleystone.

He’s been a regular with Roleystone Theatre for the past three decades and has also worked with Attic Theatre and the Graduate Dramatic Society.

In 1985, Martin won the Finley Award for best musical for Esther and also scored the 2000 best play award for An Ideal Husband.

More recently, he has directed The Crucible, The Club, Influence and The Teahouse of the August Moon and performed in By Jeeves, Into The Woods and Cosi.

A Month of Sundays appealed because it’s a witty script by a writer with high credentials,” Martin said.

“It deals with the problem of ageing with humour and compassion, which is something everyone must face eventually.

“My main challenges are to convincingly move like someone who is quite restricted physically and balancing the humour with depth of feeling when needed.”

A Month of Sundays plays at 8pm, April 5, 6, 10, 12 and 13 with a 2pm matinee April 7. Tickets are $16 adults, $12 concession – book on 9397 5730 or through the online booking and payment system at http://www.roleystonetheatre.com.au/web/Coming%20Attractions.
