Follow the unwinding personal stories of three bystanders who find that they become the centre of the action in the aftermath of a civil rights meeting.

The Freedom of the City was first produced in 1973. Set in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1970, the play follows three protesters who mistakenly find themselves in the mayor's parlour in the Guildhall, and their presence is interpreted as an occupation. The play illustrates their final hours in the Guildhall, their failed escape and the tribunal into their deaths.

The play skilfully interweaves the present with flashbacks to the main story - the final hours of the lives of three peaceful marchers who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.
