A HEARTFELT family drama exploring love, loss and life will have its world premiere at Roleystone Theatre this March.

Written and directed by Mark Thompson, A House That Jack Built is about parties, family and friends and has equal doses of tragedy, humour and honesty.

Set on two different birthdays in the same man’s life, the play is inspired by events and stories from the playwright’s life.

“A House That Jack Built features stories that all families love to tell,” Thompson said.

“The play was written in memory of my grandfather who, at the time, had been given six months to two years to live.

“Happily, he was able to read the final script but sadly he won’t be at opening night.”

Originally performing as a small child, simply because his older brother was acting, Thompson took a more serious turn in high school and embraced a passion for the stage.

Roles in Macbeth, Othello and Guys and Dolls followed, along with a turn as Wilbur in Charlotte’s Web at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

Since then, Thompson has appeared with Laughing Horse Productions, Phoenix Theatre, Nine Lives Productions and the Rockingham Children’s Choir in shows such as The Pirates of Penzance, Oliver!, The Wind in The Willows and Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

As A House That Jack Built is his first written work to be performed, he also wanted to direct it.

“It’s also my first foray into directing, which is a little bit daunting, but I couldn’t have a better place to start,” Thompson said.
