Starring Geraldine Turner as Momma Rose
in
GYPSY
The story is a classic showbiz one: a pushy stage mother, Rose goes to extreme lengths to make stars of her two daughters, June and Louise. Set on the vaudeville circuiut in the 1920s it’s a story about making it in show business no matter what the personal cost. Vaudeville itself is dying and Louise finds herself in a house of burlesque where she reads lines and eventually steps in to strip becoming an overnight sensation and superstar.
However this is mostly her mothers story – Rose is the stage mother of all stage mothers.
Set all across America in the 1920’s, when vaudelville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of show business with brass, humour, heart and sophistication. The Celebrated score, by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, boasts one glorious hit after another, including: ‘Let Me Entertain You’, ‘Some People’, ‘You’ll Never Get Away from Me’, ‘If Momma Was Married’, ‘All I Need Is The Girl’, ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’, ‘You Gotta Get A Gimmick’, ‘Small World’ and ‘Together Wherever We Go’.
Our production of Gypsy will feature Australian Theatre Star – Geraldine Turner as Momma Rose supported by an extremely talented local cast. Miss Turner is one of Australia’s most renowned musical theatre performers, having starred in shows including Chicago, Anything Goes and Guys and Dolls. She is a grande dame of the Australian stage.
