The Getting Of Wisdom
By Elizabeth Avery Scott
Based on the novel by Henry Handel Richardson
Directed by Samuel Farr
Young Laura Tweedle Rambotham is sent to boarding school in Melbourne, only to discover she doesn’t quite fit in. She always seems to say and do things that are not quite acceptable to her peers – and she bears the brunt of their constant teasing. All she wants to do is fit in… so to entertain her classmates, she creates an entire fantasy world around the dishy Reverend Robbie Shepherd, till it all gets a little out of control…
This story, written by Australian novelist Henry Handel Richardson back in 1910 and adapted for the stage by Elizabeth Avery Scott, still has something to say to teenagers today. Even back then, Victorian schoolgirls battled competition with peers, problems at school, struggles with clothes and body image, burgeoning sexuality, making and keeping friends, and finding their place in the world.
