Raised in a small country town north of Adelaide, Rhys studied at The University of Adelaide, graduating with first-class honours in Mechanical Engineering and Arts (Politics), with an honours design and build project entitled 'Micycle - A Self-Balancing Unicycle'. Rhys relocated to Canberra in 2011 and works as an information technology consultant with Accenture.

Rhys studied piano during primary and high school, and first took singing lessons after singing with several university-based choirs. In Canberra, Rhys has continued to focus on classical voice, training with David Reedy. Rhys has been involved in various productions with Canberra Opera as a singer, repetiteur and music director. Canberra Philharmonic Society roles have included ensemble in Fiddler on the Roof (2012), Les Miserables (2013), keyboard/repetiteur for Little Shop of Horrors (2013), and co-music director & ensemble for Cabaret (2014).
