Stephen Pike has been involved in the Canberra/Queanbeyan theatrical scene for over thirty years. He has experience in all aspects of theatre having performed, directed, written, and produced many productions.
He was owner/manager of Tarzan's Theatre Restaurant from 1990 - 1999 where his productions were critically acclaimed and won Best Theatre Restaurant in the Canberra Area Theatre Awards in 1994, 1995 and 1996.
He has performed lead roles in FINNIAN'S RAINBOW, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, GREASE, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOURED DREAMCOAT, HAIR, GODSPELL, CHICAGO, ASPECTS OF THEIR MUSICALS, LES MISERABLES, Canberra Repertory's 30TH ANNIVERSARY OLD TIME MUSIC HALL and most recently CHESS. For his portrayal of Jean Val Jean in LES MISERABLES he was awarded the Canberra Area Theatre Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1996.
In 2001 he directed Duncan Ley's original play THE BURNING and in 2002 TWELVE ANGRY MEN. Both plays winning Best Play at the Canberra Area Theatre Awards in their respective years.
In 2003 he directed Canberra Philharmonic's highly acclaimed production of CHICAGO winning Best Musical and Duncan Ley's original play IN COLD LIGHT which won Best Original Work at the CAT Awards.
He has also directed DEALERS CHOICE for HMT, nominated for Best Play, 2004 Canberra Area Theatre Awards, George Huitker's original play NOT JUST FOOTY, THE GOLDEN JUBILEE CONCERT OF THE BAND OF THE ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE, the Tom Stoppard play ON THE RAZZLE for Canberra Rep, RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET for Supa Productions and WHEN IN ROME for New Century.
In 2006 he directed a youth production of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, directed CATS for Canberra Philharmonic and BUDDY The Musical Buddy Holly Story for Supa Productions, with CATS winning Best Musical at the 2007 CAT Awards.
Stephen Commenced work as Program Manager at The Q - Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre in 2007. In 2009 he played Anatoly in Queanbeyan City Council's highly acclaimed production of CHESS. In 2010 he directed the musical FAME for Queanbeyan Players. He received a Special Mention in the Manning Clark House National Cultural Awards 2011 for "an outstanding contribution to Australian Cultural Life" for his direction of The Q's production of the musical BLOOD BROTHERS. In 2012 he directed the LOVE ROCK MUSICAL - HAIR for which he received a Canberra Critic's Circle Award - "For his confident and imaginative direction of the Queanbeyan City Council's production of HAIR. His Clear-sighted concept and ability to martial disparate resources including a large committed cast, impressive orchestra, excellent sound, lighting and costume design, resulted in a memorable production which successfully captured the life-affirming essence of the show."
In 2013 he directed Queanbeyan City Council's Production of I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT NOW CHANGE which won a Canberra Area Theatre Award for Best Musical. He also directed THE BURNING for Canberra Boys Grammar which won a host of CAT awards including Best Production of a School or Youth Play.
Stephen has been a judge and director of the Awards Night for The Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) Awards for 18 years. He also judged the Canberra One-Act Play Festival twice and the Riverside Plaza Star Search for 4 years.
