This 2017 play by Kathryn Attwood is based on Austen’s unfinished 1803 novel of the same name – The Watsons. The play presents us with a delightful cast of characters who provide amusing entertainment to everyone no matter how familiar with Austen’s stories. The feisty heroine Emma Watson, raised in luxury by a wealthy aunt and destined to be an heiress has returned home, penniless, to her impoverished family, and what a family they are! The chauvinistic brother, spinster sisters, curmudgeonly father and eccentric family retainer tick all the boxes. As do the local caddish rogue, shy Lord amongst other potential suitors.
The Watsons offers surprises and delights for those new to Jane Austen as well as her long-time fans, along with some unexpectedly modern twists as the path of a Regency girl looking for love proves to be anything but smooth.
CONTENT WARNING: Regency frocks, duelling with manners, the shameless pursuit of money and other Austen Easter eggs may vex some audience members.
